Da Baffi, Berlin

I am taking a short break from my California-posts although this rainy June in Berlin so makes me want to go back to sunny Los Angeles. In order to cure my wanderlust a little, I went out of my usual quarters here in Berlin and wandered off to Wedding, where a small Italian restaurant lies that the Foodie in Berlin had written about on her blog. I looked at her photos and immediately knew that i had to go there - the design of the place was so compelling!

The interior design of da Baffi is the perfect mixture between thought-through design, creating a space that looks like it has always existed like this and very very lovable details creating a reminiscent mood, such as this photo/painting wall. When I was growing up in the 80s, an Italian restaurant just wasn't complete if it did not have such a wall of fame!

I think it is very difficult to create such a wall of fame, usually things like that have to develop over a course of years. In da Baffi however the photos really feel like they have been there for quite some years, with a new one being added every now and then! Thumps up for that!  And they also manage to keep the balance between such nostalgic details and modern features, such as the light on the wall in the cozy dining room.

We started with spinach and mozarella filled Crespelle which tasted lovely, though I wish the portion size was a tad smaller.

As a main, I had the tagliatelle with scallops in orange-flavored butter. The pasta was great, so were se scallops and the fruity tone perfect for a summer meal.

My company had the squid-risotto with Scampi. I am not really into Scampi (I think they are boring...), but the risotto was great, just as schlonzig (that's southern German for slimy) as you want it to be.

My dessert however was the best part of the evening. A semifreddo to die for. Sometimes, the simple things are the best. It was served with a very thick, heavy, and not-too-sweet-at-all ( that's a good sign!) chocolate sauce! Second servings should be mandatory!

My sister had a chocolate cake, which she prefered over my semifreddo. I however thought it was just another chocolate cake, a tasty one, sure, but nothing super exciting.

All in all: Da Baffi is so worth wandering to one of Berlin's Kiez' (quarter) which is hardly known as the center of great food! The dining room makes you feel right at home.

And the Foodie in Berlin has already written everything about the beautiful exterior of the place! I couldn't have said it better...

So, ragazzi, take U 6 or U 9 to Leopoldplatz and enjoy a wonderful evening at da Baffi!
